Kakheti is the region of wine-producing and wineries. Gremi, used to be the capital of ancient Kingdom of Kakheti in the period of 16-17th centuries. The town is composed from three principal parts, the first one is the royal residence, then the commercial neighborhood and the archangels’ Church complex. It should be noted that the monuments of Gremi have been proposed for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The very famous Archangels’ Church Complex is located on a hill. It is composed of a bell tower, three-story castle and a wine cellar. It is a cruciform domed church built chiefly of stone. Its design mixes traditional Georgian masonry with a local interpretation.
Ilia lake is called so in honor of famous Georgian writer– Ilia Chavchavadze, it is a gorgeous handmade lake in the north part of Kakheti, Alazani valley, near town Kvareli.
